3-D partnership brings sets and content to Korea
Searching for the next big consumer gold mine, electronic giant LG recently inked a deal with Skyview Korea to bring 3-D programming to Asian viewers. LG will make the sets; Skyview will provide satellite delivery of the 3-D content.
LG will introduce a range of 3-D TVs in sizes from 42in to 72in in 2010. This is in addition to the 47in LCD 3-D TV the company is already selling. LG said it would add 3-D functionality to other high-end LG TV sets next year and soon release projectors supporting up to 150in 3-D screens.
The electronics maker will support two types of 3-D display technology. One technology will require viewers to wear active shutter glasses. The other 3-D TV technology will use a passive filter that mounts in front of the television display screen. This approach does not require the use of glasses.
The company predicted it would sell 400,000 3-D TVs in 2010 and 3.4 million units in 2011. Some experts believe this represents what is expected to be a buildup to the 2012 London Olympics, which is scheduled to be broadcast in 3-D.
Both companies will invest in the development of 3-D content with the first 3-D broadcast scheduled to be the FIS Snowboard World Cup.
LG says it has similar plans for a 3-D rollout in both America and Europe.
