Thomson Grass Valley (SL106) is highlighting its new ViBE EM3100 encoder targeted at HD contribution/backhaul link applications. The ViBE EM3100 MPEG-4 4:2:2 encoder and ViBE iRD3100 MPEG-4 4:2:2 decoder are designed for fixed and mobile applications and are ideally suited to demanding live broadcasting, such as sports.
Currently much of remote content is coded in MPEG-2 at around 50 Mb/s for transmission back to the network broadcast center. With the new ViBE encoder, broadcasters will be able to use the much more efficient MPEG-4 compression, achieving superior 4:2:2 image quality at around 30 Mb/s, which results in A companion ViBE iRD-3100 MPEG -4 decoder is also available.
The ViBE EM3100 and iRD3100 contribution codec are both housed in a compact 1 RU chassis, making them the perfect fit in constrained areas such as satellite or outside broadcast vehicles. developed with the encoder provides low latency – in the range 350 to 850 ms – and has a quick boot time of less than 15 seconds, which compares very favorably with current technology which takes two to three minutes to be on air following a power failure.
