New Omneon Media Application Server Delivers Centralized Management and Processing for Media-Intensive Applications

SUNNYVALE, Calif — Sept. 10, 2009 — Omneon Inc. today introduced the new Omneon Media Application Server, the first dedicated application server designed specifically to address the needs of demanding media operations in broadcast and production workflows. Easing the development and deployment of dedicated enterprise media management applications from developer partners and customers, the Media Application Server ensures that content across complex environments can be easily managed and processed from a centralized platform.

Omneon is also introducing a new suite of applications powered by the Media Application Server including Omneon ProXplore, a new clip and metadata management utility, and new versions of the Omneon ProBrowse proxy application and the Omneon ProXchange transcode application. This suite of applications provides simple clip processing and management tools via a common Web-based user interface that can be made available throughout the enterprise. Offering a core set of functionality common to almost any media workflow, these standard off-the-shelf applications enable basic clip management.

Built on standard IT hardware, the Omneon Media Application Server is a software platform that delivers greatly improved performance and scalability by decoupling client computers and data storage operations from media management and application processing. Application servers provide proven advantages including improved efficiency through centralized administration and configuration, centralized security for controlled access to content, scalable performance, data integrity, and a common messaging bus. The Omneon Media Application Server is designed specifically to bring these advantages to media organizations and to enforce and optimize the complex workflows in those environments.

"The concept of an application server is very popular within the IT world, but until now the inherent challenges of working with complex media files made it difficult to deliver an efficient platform tailored to digital media workflows," said Geoff Stedman, Omneon senior vice president of marketing and business development. "Our new platform enables us to deliver our Media Services Framework and new applications in a simple, easy-to-deploy device that will ease application development and help streamline integration. By offering a full range of media management and processing services via both a consolidated API for third-party integration and our own applications, the Media Application Server makes it simple for media organizations to deploy best-of-breed systems optimized for their specific workflow requirements."

Embedded within the Omneon Media Application Server is the Omneon Media Services Framework (MSF), a Web-services API for applications to use for managing content and processing media on Omneon systems. The Media Application Server is not limited to just Omneon services and provides an open platform that supports straightforward integration of third-party services for tasks such as archive management, QC, content repurposing, branding, and graphics compositing. Omneon is now providing a full Media Application Server SDK, including API documentation and sample source code free of charge to licensed application developers.
