Baby Boom Pictures Installs Small Tree’s Shared Storage Technology to Improve Workflow

Primarily a one-man, full-service production company, Warren Eig’s Baby Boom Pictures relies on state-of-the-art technology to ensure that he can meet tight deadlines and keep revenue streams coming in by taking on new projects. Periodically using an assistant editor to help on larger projects, Eig, an award-winning director, has installed shared storage technology from Small Tree to improve workflow between the studio’s two rooms.

Designer of simple-to-install, inexpensive networking and shared storage products for professional video and audio editors using Mac OS X, Small Tree provided Baby Boom Pictures with a bundled Ethernet solution reaching Fibre Channel performance. To facilitate workflow, Bob Zelin, a respected independent video engineer with more than 30 years experience, installed Small Tree’s Edge-corE ES4524D, a 24-port Gigabit Ethernet switch, along with its PEG4, a 4-port Gigabit Ethernet card.

Founded in 1999, Baby Boom Pictures currently runs Final Cut Pro Studio 6.0.5 with Kona 3, as well as Adobe After Effects, via Mac Pro in his two editing suites. According to Eig, Small Tree’s shared storage solution is pushing 70 MBps over Ethernet, which is critical, considering he was looking for robust technology that could provide him with the support he required without having to take apart his studio’s entire infrastructure.

“We’ve spent a lot of time pushing the Small Tree system to make sure it would handle whatever we could throw at it and it has met every challenge,” said Eig. “With Small Tree’s technology, I am able to work simultaneously on a project with an assistant editor, access the footage in compressed HD and work over Pro HD or ProRes 422 HQ without any difficulty.”

“While we needed a solution that would allow us to work more efficiently and effectively, I was unwilling to move forward with any technology that would require major changes to our infrastructure,” Eig continued. “Having the capabilities we have now using Gigabit Ethernet prevented a bunch of headaches and saved us a lot of money.”
