It's clear this year at NAB that mobile TV technology isn't something broadcasters are just talking about, it's arrived. That much was true at Harris' booth in the North Hall, which was abuzz with attendees hoping to catch a glimpse of this exciting new technology.
Aside from sponsoring this morning's Open Mobile Video Coalition breakfast, Harris is showing its MPH platform for ATSC Mobile DTV. The system consists of four components: the NetVX mobile encoding platform; Synchrony MNA, a synchronous mobile networking adapter; the Apex M2X exciter; and the Roundbox server.
Visitors to the booth can witness a demonstration of the technology enabling the first U.S. deployment of mobile DTV at WRAL-DT in Raleigh, NC.
WRAL is using the MPH platform and the company's InfoCaster digital signage systems to deliver mobile DTV programming to public buses traveling around Raleigh.
In addition to WRAL, Sinclair Broadcasting's KVMY-DT in Las Vegas will host a demonstration of the MPH platform. The station is broadcasting three mobile DTV channels and a program guide over the air to mobile DTV receivers around Vegas.
At the breakfast this morning, the OMVC announced that about 70 stations have agreed to provide live TV broadcasts in 28 markets before the end of the year.
