KT SELECTS HARMONIC FOR DUAL SATELLITE AND TERRESTRIAL DISTRIBUTION OF PRIMARY AND BACKUP CHANNELS
SUNNYVALE, CALIF. -- DECEMBER 7, 2009 -- Harmonic Inc. (NASDAQ: HLIT) today announced that KT (KSE: 030200), a leading integrated telecommunications company in Korea, has deployed Harmonic's Ellipse(TM) 1000 contribution encoder, ProView(TM) 2900 integrated receiver/decoder (IRD) and network management solution for distribution of primary and backup broadcast channels to over 160 cable operators nationwide. This deployment enables KT to provide cost-effective and secure satellite distribution with terrestrial IP backup services, and deliver additional channels--thereby facilitating robust content contribution and maximizing bandwidth utilization.
"Harmonic's solutions provide us with the solid foundation in which to grow our business and further enhance services to our customers," said Sangku Chang, Director at KT. "With Harmonic's superior and versatile technology, we are able to build upon our legacy systems to create an end-to-end solution for contribution and distribution applications, so we can continue to offer state-of-the-art services now and in the future."
The Ellipse 1000 encoder for fixed contribution allows KT to simulcast the same content to both satellite and terrestrial distribution paths, in variable bit-rate (VBR) for satellite distribution and constant bit-rate (CBR) for terrestrial distribution. The Ellipse 1000 also provides KT with full encryption capabilities to secure content for both distribution paths. Additionally, the Ellipse 1000's advanced encoding technology and bandwidth efficiency gives KT the option to add more channels in the future.
Harmonic's professional ProView 2900 IRD is a broadcast-quality decoder, decryptor and interface converter that provides MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) standard definition decoding, advanced transport stream processing, cutting-edge IP processing technologies and a variety of front-ends, including DVB-S2 and MPEG over IP.
"Harmonic's Ellipse 1000 and ProView 2900 provide KT with a cost-effective platform that builds upon their legacy systems to deliver significant operational efficiencies and advantages," said Nimrod Ben-Natan, Vice President of Product Marketing, Solutions and Strategy for Harmonic Inc. "KT's selection of our Ellipse and ProView products, following our acquisition of Scopus Video Networks earlier this year, further demonstrates our growing momentum in the contribution and distribution sector."
