FULL SAIL PROVIDES “REAL-WORLD EDUCATION” WITH CANON U.S.A.‘S HD LENSES
LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., August 8, 2007 - As one of the world‘s best-known media arts colleges, Full Sail Real World Education has a core mission: to make sure its graduates are ready to work in today‘s media businesses as soon as they step off campus. The path toward accomplishing this goal includes training Full Sail‘s students with the industry‘s most advanced and widely used technology. This is why the school‘s HD Production department has outfitted its cameras with Canon HD portable, studio, and cine lenses.
“One very important reason why students choose Full Sail is that they recognize our desire to provide them with equipment that is recognized as the industry standard,” said Scott Dansby, project coordinator of industry relations, Full Sail Real World Education. “In HD video production, as well as in digital cinematography, Canon meets this criterion. We want students to use Canon lenses in their classes and labs because that‘s what they‘ll use when they graduate and begin working.”
“Canon makes a full line of HD lenses for every application: studio, sports, ENG, nature documentaries, and digital cinematography,” remarked Gordon Tubbs, director, Broadcast and Communications Division, Canon U.S.A. “Whether the person behind the camera is a beginner or a seasoned veteran, Canon provides superior HD lens technologies designed to capture the very best images for every kind of production.”
For HD field shoots of live concerts and other special events, Full Sail students take on their assignments with two Canon HJ11ex4.7B IASE eHDxs wide-angle HD zoom lenses. The HJ11ex4.7B wide-angle HD zoom lens is designed to provide maximum portability and versatility in field-production applications. One of Canon‘s eHDxs family of lenses, the HJ11ex4.7B features Canon‘s exclusive Enhanced Digital “eDrive” technology, which enables users to automate select lens functions (such as memorized focus and zoom positions, zoom speed, “padded” zoom starts/stops, and iris settings) depending on their personal preferences.
“These lenses have extremely tight and responsive controls,” stated Haynes, regarding the eDrive feature on the HJ11ex4.7B IASE eHDxs wide-angle HD zoom lenses. “You can set these HD lenses to do all these incredible things, such as set the zoom speed between two preset focus points. Once you get into the deep functions of the Canon lenses, they just amaze you.”
Students shooting high-concept music videos and other studio productions can use three Canon DIGISUPER XJ23x7B IE-D HD studio lenses. Known as the DIGISUPER 23xs, this high-performance studio zoom lens features Canon‘s proprietary Power Optical System and X-Element design to achieve the best possible HD pictures even when used in low-light settings.
Digital cinematography projects at Full Sail are captured using Canon‘s FJs5mm and FJs14mm cine prime lenses. The school has two each of both lenses, which, along with the other four models in this series, are the most compact and lightweight 2/3-inch prime lenses in the industry. These HD-EC (High Definition-Electronic Cinematography) lenses feature a 280-degree focus-rotation angle for full focus control, dual large engraved luminous scales, and gearing for controls that meet film-industry standards on positioning and threading. Full Sail‘s digital cinematography program also has 11 YH16x7 KRSB standard-definition lenses for beginner students.

“The lenses we are using are very impressive, and made to the highest standards of workmanship,” stated Rob Haynes, associate course director of HD Production. “The imagery our Canon lenses produce is gorgeous. We might be shooting a stage set with intelligent lights, or kids outside playing football, and we‘ll get complete, beautiful color separation. It‘s great to be able to ‘paint‘ the exact picture that you want to shoot, and these lenses help us to do just that.”
Canon‘s customer service has kept the company on Full Sail‘s honors list since even before the HD lenses arrived on campus. “Our Canon representative spent a lot of time with us,” recalled Dansby, “The representative met with the staff, talked to us about the technology, and saw how technology fits in with our programs. Canon doesn‘t just bring us the product and service it. The company understands our educational model, and - equally important - it recognizes and appreciates the value of having a relationship that goes deeper than just vendor/customer.”
While tomorrow‘s HD producers hone their skills at Full Sail using the same Canon equipment that they‘ll encounter in the real world, this renowned school advances its curriculum knowing it has a reliable technology provider on its side. “Canon‘s HD lenses are amazing, and equally valuable for Full Sail, is the time and availability that the Canon staff has afforded to us, again and again,” Dansby affirmed. “They‘ve been able to work with us at so many different levels, but they also get the big picture. That‘s our experience with Canon.”
