Directing video podcasts
Today at NAB I attended a session called “Directing video podcasts” presented by Richard Harrington, president and founder of RHED Pixel.
The session was of particular interest to me because this year I’ve been tasked with orchestrating Broadcast Engineering’s video coverage from NAB.
Here were some of the highlights:
If you have a bad feeling, say something. Trust your instincts. If you are recording and you want to make sure it’s being shot in the right frame rate, double check. It’s not going to hurt you to check. It will hurt you if you ignore your instincts and find out later that you were right.
Richard says he never starts a shoot until the talent is smiling. He says, “Have fun on the set!” I’m going to keep this in mind when I’m on-camera this week so our video appears relaxed and natural.
Video must add to a broadcast by delivering something that cannot be relayed by an audio-only broadcast. I think that’s important. My hope is that the technology demos Broadcast Engineering shoots from NAB will give you a first-hand look at some of the hottest new products at NAB. I don't know about you, but I'm a visual person, and being at NAB is great because I can actually see how the technology works.
Finally, Richard said scripts and podcasts are contradictory. Podcasts should feel genuine, so don’t read from a script.
