SOUND DEVICES DEBUTS FIRMWARE UPDATE FOR THE 788T DIGITAL RECORDER AT AES 2008

SAN FRANCISCO, CA, OCTOBER 3, 2008 — Sound Devices announces the latest firmware update for its best-selling 788T Digital Recorder at this year’s AES show (Booth 1231). The 1.5 firmware upgrade adds AES 42 digital microphone support, sampling rate converters, and new metadata handling to the recorder.

Sound Devices’ 788T Digital Recorder has quickly gained a strong reputation in the audio industry for its multi-track capabilities which include eight full-featured microphone inputs and eight tracks of recording, while sustaining the compact size that has become a trademark of the 7-Series recorders. With the latest revision of firmware, the 788T gains several key features including improvements in metadata handling, where changes are applied to files across all attached drives, and all files for a given take. This helps to further streamline the communication between crew in the field and in post. To allow for the connection of digital microphones, users can now enable the 788T’s

on-board sampling rate converters when needed to support multiple AES 42 microphones. This makes the 788T one of the first recorders to allow for the connection of an AES 42 digital microphone.

As multi-microphone surround recording becomes more prevalent, the firmware helps provide several new headphone modes for the 788T to facilitate monitoring multi-mic surround recording in the field. The update also provides new capabilities to the limiter, to offer the user more recording options.

"The 788T continues to gain new capabilities through our regular firmware upgrades,” says Jon Tatooles, managing director for Sound Devices. “Features like AES 42 support were built in from the beginning, and are now activated. The new firmware revision 1.5 continues to add to the 788T’s already class-leading features.”
