HOLOPHONE’S® PORTAMIC 5.1 NOMINATED FOR TEC AWARD
Offers Point and Shoot 5.1 Surround Recording Option at an Aggressive Price Point
ONTARIO, CANADA, JULY 29, 2009 — Holophone ®, the leading manufacturer of surround microphones, is pleased to announce that its ground-breaking PortaMic 5.1 camera-mountable surround microphone has been nominated for the MIX Foundation’s Technical Excellence & Creativity Award (TEC) in the Mic Technology/Studio category.
Nominees were selected by a panel of audio industry leaders. Products that are selected represent a superior accomplishment in their fields. Voting is then carried out by members of prominent professional audio and music industry organizations as well as industry websites including the Audio Engineering Society, Producers & Engineers Wing of the Recording Academy and Broadjam.com. Those eligible to vote must register online and vote via a secure online ballot during the month of August.
Building upon the technologies first seen in the company’s H4SuperMINI, the PortaMic 5.1 offers users professional-grade, 5.1 audio recording at a price that fits into any production budget. According to Michael Godfrey, president and founder of Holophone, “We are honored that for the second time a Holophone microphone has been nominated for one of the top awards in the industry. When we first developed the PortaMic 5.1, we were looking to take the technology found in our high-end mic models and make it accessible to all regardless of budget and skill set. Being nominated for a TEC award illustrates to us that the PortaMic 5.1 is on its way to becoming an industry standard for recording surround sound.”
The PortaMic 5.1’s compact size, low learning curve and aggressive price point make it a perfect addition to any audio application including in-studio, field recording, documentary and ENG. For users looking for additional control over their recordings, the company has expanded on the design of the PortaMic 5.1 with the PortaMic Pro which will retail for $999 and offers an audio zoom button that increases the forward bias of the mic’s pick-up pattern as well as balanced stereo output via a locking 6-pin mini XLR. The patented design of the PortaMic 5.1 and PortaMic Pro allows users to simply capture from a single point source, a discrete surround recording, with no additional mixing required.
Looking to work within the industry’s current stereo infrastructure, the PortaMic 5.1 and PortaMic Pro are equipped with Dolby Laboratories’ Dolby® Pro Logic II® encoder. This allows the mic’s six audio channels to be encoded down to two channels, so they can be recorded to any broadcast camera or stereo recording device.
For more than 20 years, the TEC Awards have been the foremost program recognizing the achievements of audio professionals. Presented each year by the MIX Foundation for Excellence in Audio, the TEC Awards honor the individuals, companies and technical innovations behind the sound of recordings, films, TV shows and live performances. It also contributes thousands of dollars each year on behalf of hearing conservation as well as funding scholarships for future audio professionals.
