Canadian media company Corus Entertainment is using Omneon Spectrum media server systems to support ingest, storage, and fully redundant playout of eight channels of commercial content and five networks in their entirety, including commercial and programming content, and delayed network playout.
The Corus stable of specialty television channels includes YTV, Treehouse TV, W Network, CMT, The Documentary Channel, SCREAM, and Discovery Kids ¯ all originating from the company’s Toronto facilities. There, a primary Spectrum playout server, under the control of Harris automation, supports commercial and program playout, while a second Spectrum system serves as a three-hour delay server playing out two networks, YTV and W Network, to Western Canadian provinces.
A third Spectrum system handles all ingest of content and is tied into a Front Porch Digital DIVArchive media management solution, which in turn is linked to an ADIC nearline LTO2 tape storage. Once media is ingested into the system, it moves among file systems and storage devices to be replayed by ID number without any further intervention. Corus production staff use Final Cut Pro systems and file format manipulation software to send content to the Omneon server, resulting in file-based delivery from the edit suite to the server system.
