Ericsson performs chipset interoperability tests for MBMS solution
Ericsson recently performed interoperability tests for its Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (MBMS) solution with several leading chipset vendors, taking another step forward in its efforts to push the market adoption of the technology.
MBMS enables operators to broadcast different forms of content in different parts of a mobile network, providing a more cost-effective and quick means of launching such multimedia services as mobile television. It is designed to work with existing network infrastructure, and allows an unlimited number of users to use the service concurrently, which will stimulate the development of new mobile mass-media services for mass-market mobile TV penetration.
The interoperability tests were conducted with several platform vendors, among them Ericsson Mobile Platforms and QUALCOMM. Commercial rollout of Ericsson’s MBMS in the 3G networks will start with early launch systems in March 2008, followed by full deployment in September 2008.
