Hong Kong’s PCCW debuts HD service with Harmonic’s H.264 encoders
PCCW has deployed numerous Harmonic DiviCom Electra 7000 HD MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) encoders to support its HD channel service in Hong Kong.
PCCW is a telecommunications service provider offering video, voice, data and mobile services to its customers across the country, and operates now TV — one of Hong Kong’s largest IPTV servicse with more than 882,000 subscribers.
PCCW also uses Harmonic’s SD encoders as well as the company’s video-on-demand (VOD) servers and software to deliver more than 150 broadcast channels.
The Electra 7000 provides up to four channels of constant bit rate (CBR) or variable bit rate MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) video. It is an HD encoder based on ASIC processing technology and provides a full 20 percent compression gain over the first generation of DSP-based MPEG-4 HD encoders.
Currently, satellite, telco and cable operators in North America, Europe and Asia use the Electra 7000 to deliver more than 1500 HD H.264 video channels.
