There have been many changes in the business since the last NAB. Dubbed “electronic media's essential destination,” the show promises to embrace the emerging technologies alongside radio and television. There has been the rise of user-generated content — over the Web and via mobile phones. Folks are now looking at the business opportunities of mobile TV; last year, it was all about technology trials. IPTV continues to grow as video compression efficiencies ease the problems of distribution to the consumer.
Although notionally a national show, NAB has always welcomed international visitors. For our industry, the NAB show has always proved to be the place to see new product launches. For any broadcasters wanting to invest in new technology, the show is a must.
The show is not just about technology; research has shown that the networking aspect is just as important. It's the place to meet fellow chief engineers and compare notes.
For many, the conference is the attraction. Plus it has the advantage that it's easier on the feet than walking the aisles.
In many emerging nations, the broadcast operations are run by expatriates. Las Vegas provides the opportunity to meet old friends and catch up on developments in our industry, both technical and on the business side.
