DVB-T2, a next generation DVB transmission standard for terrestrial digital broadcasting will be demonstrated at IBC2008 in Amsterdam.
The live demonstration at the DVB stand (1.D81) will show MPEG-4 encoded HDTV content delivered over an end to end terrestrial transmission system using DVB-T2 technology. Key members of the DVB-T2 development team will provide a "walk-thru" of the specification, explaining how it works and the steps toward implementation.
The new specification can provide a 30%-50% increase in data carrying capacity without having to invest in more powerful transmitters to deliver multichannel HDTV and datacasting services, according to the DVB Project, an industry-led consortium. The DVB Project includes more than 260 broadcasters, manufacturers, network operators, software developers, regulatory bodies from more than 35 countries. DVB is the terrestrial DTV standard for Europe, and parts of Asia and South America. More than 220 million DVB receivers have been deployed worldwide, according to the DVB Project.
Companies involved in the demonstration will include:
- BBC Research and Innovation, which introduced the world's first DVB-T2 modulator, which has been on the air since June. Implementing all the functional blocks of the specification for the first time, DVB-T2 will be both transmitted and received at the DVB Booth, on Channel 36. HDTV broadcasts based on the DVB-T2 standard are expected to be launched in the U.K. by the end of 2009.
- ENESYS, NXP Semiconductors and Pace will demonstrate an end to end wireless transmission using DVB-T2 technologies. The demonstration will show how new DVB-T2 techniques make reception possible in environments where DVB-T services at the same bitrate would fail.
