Spreadtrum, Mirics move China’s mobile TV past handset to PC, laptop, netbook
When is mobile TV not TV on a mobile phone? When it's mobile TV on a PC, and it's a market that offers the advantage of letting operators reach customers directly, without a phone carrier intermediary.
That's the idea behind Mirics Semiconductor and Spreadtrum Communications' partnership to deliver CMMB embedded solutions for Chinese PCTV applications by pairing Mirics' FlexiRF integrated circuit tuner technology and Spreadtrum's demodulator and decoder system-on-a-chip.
The collaboration with Mirics will let Spreadtrum "address PCTV applications with reference designs that will enable manufacturers to easily integrate broadcast reception into PCs," said Spreadtrum CEO Dr Ping Wu.
The companies are also collaborating on cellular handset reference designs for select OEMs and ODMs. The CMMB PCTV reference platforms will be available to lead customers and partners for PC platform integration before the end of the year.
