SSL announces new X-Rack, Mynx modules
At AES, Solid State Logic released two new modules for its modular X-Rack/Mynx SuperAnalogue mixing and processing system. The new modules reproduce the sonic signature of the SSL 4000 E console channel strip, featured on countless 1980s recordings.
The E Series EQ Module features two different EQs found on editions of the console produced between 1979 and 1987, each with unique response curves and tonal character, known as “brown” and “black” EQs. The new E Series EQ Module allows easy switching between these two different flavors of EQ.
Other key features of the new E Series EQ include SSL 4000 E Series circuitry, bell curve option on HF and LF and fully parametric LMF and HMF with EQ. The E Series EQ is based on the classic 611E console channel strip.
The E Series Dynamics Module features a compressor/limiter and an expander/gate, both of which return faithfully to the circuitry and key components that define the sound of the original SL 611E Series channel strip. An RMS converter is used in the side chain, while the gain element is a discrete design identical to the Class A VCA chip used in the original unit. The compressor contains additional switching options to defeat the over-easy curve and uses a linear release instead of a logarithmic curve. The result is a compressor with three distinct voices, each with its own musical character.
Both the E Series Dynamics Module and EQ Module will be available as of November 2008.
