KVBC-TV/DT in Las Vegas, NV, has upgraded its automation system to allow efficient playout of its new digital channel with minimal intervention by station personnel.
The NBC affiliate updated its OmniBus Columbus system to automate playout of its new 24-hour NBC Weather Plus channel. The Columbus system simplified the launch and maintenance of the new channel by providing a schedule and associated router control for commercial server playout, the network receiver source and local prerecorded weather content.
According to station chief engineer Mark Guranik, the automated approach has allowed the station to launch a new channel, creating an additional revenue stream, without a major reassignment of station personnel.
Viewers of KVBC's new weather channel can watch NBC national weather combined with local weather programming and commercial playout in a 15-minute block. Updated program blocks are presented 24 hours a day in a wheel format. The new channel requires only that the station's weatherman initiate recording of clips while the production crew runs the camera and audio. These shots are taken before or after cut-ins for regular broadcasts are recorded, reducing the time required to produce fresh content for insertion into the Weather Plus channel.
With control of the master control switcher and graphics devices, the Columbus automation system lets operators pre-compile complex graphics packages and news items. As a result, one KVBC operator can play out complex sequences during weather programs and bulletins.
