NEP switches Super Bowl with help from Sony MVS-8000
NEP's SuperShooter 24 mobile unit used Sony's MVS-8000 production switcher last weekend during the production of Super Bowl XXXIX from Jacksonville, FL.
The multiformat switcher operated in 720p mode to support the main game broadcast of FOX Sports, demonstrating the switcher's flexibility. In 2004, four MVS-8000 switchers supported the game in a 1080i environment, handling the pre- and postgame shows, tape release and the game.
Freelance Technical Director Joe Abbenda used the MVS-8000 to provide additional cameras and tape machines to the main game truck. He also used the switcher to perform various multi-box effects with the MVS-8000’s internal DMEs.
Abbenda noted the switcher's ability to operate in 720P mode adds an extra layer of flexibility that comes in handy during an event such as this.
In addition to the Sony switchers, a variety of Sony VTRs were also used for the broadcast.
