NHL completes HD broadcast of the Stanley Cup Finals
NBC, CBC and French sports network Reseau des Sport (RDS) recently completed coverage of the 2006 Stanley Cup Finals in HD. Since its league-imposed lockout cancelled the 2004-‘05 hockey season, the NHL sees HD broadcasts as a critical tool for its marketing arm’s efforts in building up a fan base for the league.
The Carolina Hurricanes became the Stanley Cup champions in front of an RFX-HD-CMT HD transmitter from RF Central. Games 3, 4, 6 and 7 were broadcast in HD, as well as the post-game ceremony and the commissioner’s awarding of the Conn Smythe trophy and Lord Stanley’s Cup. A cameraman operated the wireless camera outfitted with the RF Central’s RFX-HD-CMT transmitter on skates. Almost all of the on-ice celebratory video coverage was provided through the HD wireless camera and was matted to one or more RF Wireless Systems’ Canon HD video cameras.
