Samsung pursues nanotech display breakthrough
Reporting in the November issue of MIT’s Technology Review, Charles C. Mann takes a look at what may be one of the first commonplace commercial products of the emerging nanotechnological revolution: a next-generation flat-panel display whose images are generated by a layer of carbon nanontubes that shoot electrons at a phosphor screen.
Researchers are racing to perfect this novel type of display, Mann writes, which should be brighter, sharper, and less power-hungry than current flat-panel TVs. In the forefront of the nanotechnological development effort is the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology, located near Seoul, South Korea, whose researchers appear to be close to offering a commercially viable product. The magazine reports that the first commercial applications of Samsung’s new nanotech display devices – known as “field emission displays” – are slated for market launch by the end of 2006.
