WPVI to track news van location with automatic finder
WPVI Channel 6, the ABC affiliate in Philadelphia, PA, will keep track of the location of its ENG vans and other news vehicles with a wireless automatic vehicle locator, AVL.
The system will track the location of station’s news vehicles to inform news managers where their vehicles are at any given time so they can dispatch the news van in closest proximity to the site of a breaking story.
The intent is to dispatch news vehicles more quickly in a metropolitan area thereby heightening the competitive advantage of a station’s news operation and improving efficiencies.
Quality Communications, a subsidiary of WPCS International, is supplying the AVL system. AVL tracking is done through a wireless signal transmitted from an antenna located on the van. The WPVI installation follows a similar deployment at WABC in New York City last summer.
