'Digital Freedom' Campaign Underway
Saying they want to help consumers "take back" their right to use digital devices, a group of technology companies, artists, innovators and consumers have launched the "Digital Freedom" campaign.
The effort is in response to lawsuits filed against technology developers and to bills introduced in Congress, such as audio flag legislation, pushed by record labels and movie studios. The labels and studios say illegal downloading has decimated their livelihoods and that of their artists so they've increased their efforts to curb theft. More than a dozen organizations in the Digital Freedom campaign say these efforts have gone too far and infringe on consumers' legal rights.
"Congress must realize that this isn't a war between artists and pirates. It's a war by incumbents against disruptive technologies, where free speech is the collateral damage," stated Computer and Communications Industry Association President/CEO Ed Black.
