'Hangover' Sobers Up, Regains Blu-ray Lead
If only all hangovers were as pleasant as this. After taking the lead in Blu-ray movie sales a few weeks ago upon its initial release on video disc, "The Hangover" had slipped to no. 2 (albeit briefly) at the hands of fellow former blockbuster "District 9." But now the low-budget comedy that mostly takes place in Las Vegas has retaken the top slot.
In its three weeks on video disc, "The Hangover" has now become the highest-grossing comedy of all time on home video, in stats not adjusted for inflation (of which there has been virtually none lately in the U.S.).
Meanwhile, former top-spot title "Up" had slipped nearly out of the Top 10 in the past couple of weeks — only to see the Pixar-Disney film re-emerge in the latest tally back up to the no. 4 slot. "Paranormal Activity," a sleeper which was supposedly produced for a mere $15,000 and subsequently earned tens of millions at the box office, entered the Blu-ray fray for the first time at no. 3.
The Top 10 Blu-ray sales for the week ending Jan. 3, according to Nielsen VideoScan:
- "The Hangover" (Warner Bros.)
- "District 9" (Sony Pictures)
- "Paranormal Activity" (Paramount)
- "Up" (Disney)
- "9" (Universal)
- "Inglorious Basterds" (Universal)
- "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" (Warner Bros.)
- "Terminator: Salvation" (Warner Bros.)
- "Public Enemies" (Universal)
- "Star Trek" (Paramount)
