3ple-Media opens office in Johannesburg
3ple-Media, a developer of multimedia push technology for mobile operators, has set its sights on the African market, establishing a regional office in Johannesburg, South Africa, to assist operators throughout the continent with delivering new multimedia services to their subscribers.
3ple-Media sees potential in Africa for implementing its Mercury platform, a suite of core network multimedia elements required to deliver multimedia services designed to help operators realize rapid ARPU growth and fast ROI through such services. In a statement, the company said that while radio was still the only mass market advertising channel available in many African nations, a growing subscriber base of multimedia-capable GPRS handsets represents a large potential market for international and local brands to use multimedia advertising.
The company also pointed out another factor that could provide a potential mass uptake of multimedia services in the continent — the 2010 World Cup, to be hosted by South Africa. It noted a FIFA report that found that 2006 FIFA World Cup coverage across Africa saw a 131.5 percent increase over 2002, up from 7475 hours to 17,301.
