At least 97 million television households will be HD by 2010, says study

published The total cumulative number of HD sets sold to consumers will reach 377 million, creating 110 million HD households by 2015, according to a new study from Kagan Research.
In “The State of High Definition Television 2006,” Kagan Research predicts that the average price of an HD set will decline 38 percent by 2010, making the average price of an HDTV $1139. While prices decline, the availability of HD programming will grow. The result: In 2010, 97 million households, or 82 percent of television households, will have HD sets.
Other projects:
- In 2005, 9.1 million HD sets will be sold to consumers, up from 3.4 million and 5.6 million in 2003 and 2004, respectively.
- The number of cable HD subscriptions grew from 675,000 in 2003 to 2.3 million in 2004. At the end of 2005, Kagan estimates the figure will grow to 3.8 million and by 2010 it will surpass 30 million.
- The U.S. direct broadcast satellite marketplace saw 10.6 percent annual subscription growth in 2003 and 13.8 percent in 2004. In terms of HD subs, Kagan projects that by 2010, there will be more than 18 million.
- Digital OTA sets purchased will hit 1.1 million this year. The number of analog sets in over-the-air television households will be roughly 39 million at the end of 2005.
