AT&T's Cingular becomes latest adopter of MediaFLO format
Another major U.S. wireless service provider has adopted Qualcomm's MediaFLO mobile television delivery format. As part of a new agreement, AT&T's Cingular wireless unit will use MediaFLO to deliver mobile television to its subscribers. Verizon Wireless, the second largest wireless provider in the country behind Cingular, announced a similar agreement with MediaFLO in December 2005.
Cingular will launch mobile TV services on phones designed to maximize the quality of the picture using MediaFLO's multicast video clip distribution service; a datacasting application for real-time information and entertainment; and audio services.
The MediaFLO format aggregates video and data content for mobile delivery over a dedicated national network. In recent months, such broadcasters as NBC Universal, MTV Networks, FOX and CBS have signed on for content delivery through the network.
