Australia: GlobeCast Taps Tandberg HD Compression for Cricket

Tandberg Television has been given the nod by GlobeCast Australia to deploy the company’s encoders and decoders for all its HD contribution and distribution requirements. The deal means Tandberg will become instrumental in helping distribute, among other premium sports telecasts, the return of Ashes Series Test Cricket to the Southern Hemisphere.

GlobeCast Australia, whose services currently extend to an array of broadcasters in Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands, said it’s also expanding its DSNG (Digital Satellite News Gathering) encoding capabilities — also supplied by Tandberg. Concurrently, GlobeCast is engaging Tandberg pro receivers for its new “GlobeCam miniature camera broadcast initiative” — which provides bird’s-eye-view live video for sports events coverage.

At the Sydney international teleport, Tandberg has installed its E5782 MPEG-2 encoders for 4:2:0 and 4:2:2 profile HD video, as well as multi-format RX1290 MPEG-2/MPEG-4 AVC decoders. The company’s modulators (SM6620), which support the DVB-S2 standard, are also being deployed.

For expansion of its DSNG applications, GlobeCast Australia will use the E5740 Voyager MPEG-2 SD and E5788 Voyager MPEG-2 4:2:2 HD encoders.
