Sony and Panasonic are gaining supporters for their new AVCHD consumer high-definition video format, IDG News Service reported.
The two companies told IDG that support has already come from Canon, Pioneer, Samsung Electronics and Sharp on the hardware side. Among software companies, Adobe Systems, CyberLink, InterVideo, Nero AG, Sonic Solutions and Ulead Systems have expressed support, they said.
The AVCHD format was developed to get around a problem facing digital video camcorder makers: the absence of a low-cost optical disc storage medium for high-definition video. Current DVD technology doesn't support HD recording.
Sony and Panasonic created AVCHD, which stores HD MPEG-4 AVC/H.264-coded video signal on an 8cm DVD, so that HD camcorders will record on existing DVD drives as well as Flash memory cards.
The two companies have begun procedures for licensing the format.
