BBC Eyes HD Channel For America
The BBC has signaled it may soon launch an HD service in the United States as an extension of BBC America, which is available on many digital cable tiers and on DBS. The HD channel would be part of a global expansion by the government-funded broadcaster.
BBC officials said its broadcast services would be among the biggest producers of HD content anywhere within about three years, according to Multichannel News.
A BBC exec said establishing an HD service in North America and elsewhere is now a high priority within the London-based broadcast center, in order to take full advantage of the HD content currently in development or already produced.
BBC has already established itself as a presence in some American homes in recent years with its BBC America channel, which has introduced such popular fare as the original British series, "The Office."
