Broadcasters to make Web sites child-friendly
In a little-known ruling, the FCC in September 2004 set a deadline of February 1, 2005, for all broadcasters to ensure that their Web sites meet certain criteria when it comes to children’s programming. Based on requests from content owners and TV groups, stations now have until January 1, 2006 to bring their sites into compliance.
Stations and cable companies must be sure that any sites they show on-screen during children’s programming meet specific criteria. One requirement is that the home page may not contain a “store.” Any sites mentioned also must contain a significant amount of non-commercial and program-related material.
A copy of the FCC’s Order on Reconsideration, January 31, 2005 is available at http://broadcastengineering.com/news/highlights/FCC%20feb05%20rulling%20for%20website.htm.
