Canada: MTS Debuts IP HD in Winnipeg
Canadian IPTV service provider MTS Allstream has begun rolling out its HD service in sections of Winnipeg, Manitoba, with more IP upgrades scheduled to conclude for most of the city by year's end.
Winnipeg is the second market getting wired (using phone lines, in this case) for IPTV by MTS, which completed its first regional install in Canada in early 2009 in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. MTS said commencement of its Winnipeg ramp-up comes following "a successful trial" with Alcatel-Lucent and Microsoft, which provided most of the software/hardware.
MTS said its TV menu currently includes well over 200 DTV and music channels (including at least 30 on the HD tier). In addition to HD, the MTS IP service typically includes an interactive program guide with PIP, VOD, and a DVR (capable of recording in SD only).
Access to the HD channels costs an additional $3–$6 monthly.
