The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) said it will support the Advanced Television Systems Committee’s (ATSC) effort to create a standard that will allow broadcasters to transmit signals to mobile devices. The trade group is organizing a special interest group for ATSC-M/H to assist the consumer electronics community in understanding the technology and market dynamics.
The CEA said it wants to speed the development of the ATSC Mobile/Handheld (M/H), or A/153, standard through what it calls this new special interest group for ATSC-M/H. Activities will include facilitating discussions between CEA manufacturing members and broadcasters.
The CEA pledged to work with organizations like the Open Mobile Video Coalition (OMVC), a group of more than 800 local stations backing the standard.
Brandon Burgess, OMVC president and ION Media Networks chairman and CEO, said the CEA’s involvement is “a strong signal that we are very close to a full-fledged market for digital mobile television.”
The goal for all parties involved is to have a standard finalized by the second quarter of 2009.
