CES: Samsung Eyes Blu-ray Players With Wi-Fi
Samsung Electronics unveiled some of its near-future products at CES last weekend, including a line of Blu-ray Disc players that will offer both BD Live online capabilities for extending content and user choices, as well as Wi-Fi Web connectivity, without middleware upgrades.
The new Samsung models (BD-P4600, BD-P3600)—which are also wall-mountable—will contain wireless connectors (usually referred to as “dongles”) that will connect to the Internet through one of either models’ two USB ports. (Users also will be able pull in online capabilities via traditional wired connectivity.)
Some of the content that will be available through the online option will be movie and TV titles streamed from Netflix, which is growing its download inventory of titles, now about 13,000 (mostly SD). Samsung’s earlier Blu-ray models (BD-P2500, BD-P2550) also allow Netflix downloads for the video disc rental firm’s typical monthly fees.
