Chicago Plan Commission Approves 2000-foot Lakefront Spire

For several years, different plans have been offered for a tower on the Chicago lakefront that would be higher than Chicago's tallest building, the Sears Tower. With the Chicago Plan Commission's approval of a building designed by architect Santiago Calatrava, that tower may be coming closer to reality. Calatrava's design is compared to a soft serve ice cream cone in a Chicago Tribune article by architecture critic Blair Kamin. The Chicago Tribune article includes photos and video of the proposed tower.

The article didn't state whether broadcast TV antennas would be part of the tower design. From the drawings, it looks like there may be little space for antennas at the top of the narrow building, which makes a 360-degree twist from top to bottom. The tower would contain about 1,200 condominiums. Will this design go the way of earlier designs? Perhaps not. The Chicago Tribune said Calatrava explained in an interview "the developer is already getting bids for caissons."
