China's decision on the country's digital terrestrial television standard was formally announced in the Standard Administration of China document, "Announcement of Newly Approved National Standards of P.R. China," released Aug. 24. It's listed as Standard Number GB 20600-2006 -- "Framing structure, channel coding and modulation for digital television terrestrial broadcasting system."
I was unable to find an English translation of the standard on the Web, but based on other reports, the new standard is the one described in a previous RF Report that incorporates both TDS-OFDM and VSB modulation types. An article on DigiTag said the system was based on Tsinghua University's DMB-T standard and Shanghai Jiaotong University's ADTB-T standard.
An article in China View online said the Shanghai version borrowed some principles from the U.S. ATSC standard and "is suitable for transmission in sparsely populated remote areas." The Tsinghua proposal said it is based on the same modulation method as current and future mobile communications standards and has its own patents, which will cut royalty costs.
Analog Devices and Legend Silicon said they are working on the development of mobile TV receivers for China's new DTV standard. The companies demonstrated it at the International Mobitv Summit & Show 2006 in Shenzhen, China on Sept. 1-2.
