Distinguished university research professor Donald Bitzer of North Carolina State College of Engineering at Carey will join industry inventors, executives, editors and retailers in the prestigious Consumer Electronics Industry Hall of Fame. He will be inducted at the association's annual Industry Forum in San Francisco Oct. 16-18.
Bitzer, along with two colleagues at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Robert Willson and the late H. Gene Slottow, invented the plasma display in 1960. This development was the precursor to today's HD plasma TVs.
The team received an Emmy from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for its efforts in advancing TV technology. In addition, Bitzer has received numerous awards and honors, including the Vladimir K. Zworykin Award from the National Academy of Engineering in 1973 and election to the National Academy in 1974.
The 2006 class also includes Nick Holonyak Jr., inventor of light-emitting diodes (LED), George Heilmeier, inventor of liquid crystal displays (LCD), and retailer A.J. Richard. They join 97 other industry luminaries in the CEA Hall of Fame.
