The Department of Homeland Security and the FCC will hold a joint meeting June 2 to examine ways to strengthen the relationship between how local media outlets and the government can improve the operational readiness during emergencies, such as natural disasters and terror attacks.
The meeting, which will convene at 10:45 a.m. in the Commission Meeting Room at FCC headquarters in Washington D.C., will follow the first meeting of the newly rechartered Media Security and Reliability Council. It is open to the public and will be streamed via the Internet.
The forum will explore ways to promote coordination between local government and media before an emergency occurs, media awareness of service vulnerabilities, and plans for restoration of service to community, including the special needs of disability communities.
Among the panel discussions scheduled for the event are:
- Case studies in emergency planning and coordination between local media and government. Moderator: Sam Donaldson, ABC News.
- Building the lines of communication: fostering the local government/media relationship. Moderator: Tom Fitzpatrick, vice president, Giuliani Partners.
- A checklist for preparedness: how media can best ensure they are operationally ready when disaster strikes. Moderator: Fred Young, senior vice president, News, Hearst-Argyle Television.
