Commissioner urges FCC to get serious on media ownership reform

During an impromptu news conference last week, Michael Copps, the senior Democrat on the FCC, warned reporters not to buy into FCC Chairman Michael Powell’s contention that it might be impossible to design new ownership rules because the situation had been so clouded by the court.

Copps said a rewrite of the rules was definitely doable and that it was time for the FCC to finally get serious about the issues.

Copps called for a quick re-evaluation of the rules even though he noted there is a good chance a new lineup of FCC commissioners will be in place before they are approved.
