Consumers flock to ‘full HD’ LCD, plasma televisions

“Full HD,” the common marketing moniker for 1080p HDTVs, is no longer just an empty buzzword and has become one of the major selling points for televisions, according to speakers at iSuppli’s Flat Information Displays (FID) 2007 conference in Las Vegas.

Consumers are willing to pay for a better viewing experience, and with the growth potential of LCD TVs, OEMs now are promoting 1080p televisions to capture the early adopters or those who already have another full HD product in the home.

Research firm iSuppli forecasts that global revenue for full HD LCD TVs will grow to $75.4 billion by 2011, rising at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 81.7 percent from $3.8 billion in 2006. In 2007 alone, iSuppli forecasts that full HD LCD TV revenue will grow more than five-fold to reach $21.3 billion.

Full HD also has driven the plasma market for the last six months, according to Jim Palumbo, president of the Plasma Display Coalition. In the third quarter of 2007, unit sales for plasma display panel (PDP) TVs expanded 21 percent compared to the second quarter, which outpaced the growth of the entire TV market during the same period, he said.

Full HD televisions are gaining in popularity for reasons including:

  • Availability of more 1080p sets
  • Proliferation of full HD game consoles, such as the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360
  • Proliferation and availability of HD-DVD and Blu-ray DVD players
  • Increasing numbers of camcorders with full HD, with 35 percent of all such products now supporting 1080p
  • Consumer desire for higher resolution movies and TV programming
