Cox Launches Ad-Oriented VOD Channel
Cable provider Cox Communications has launched the industry's first advertiser-supported video-on-demand (VOD) channel in San Diego, Calif.
Called "Freezone," the service offers advertising content that can be viewed on-demand, with VCR-like functionality. The new advertising platform also includes permission-based follow-up interaction between viewers and advertisers. Viewers do not need any new or additional equipment to use the service other than their current set-tops and remotes.
Programming includes specialty commercial content from Coca-Cola, Sony Music, Volvo, the San Diego Zoo and San Diego's professional soccer team, the Spirit.
Cox developed Freezone with help from N2 Broadband - which provides the content packager and ad server - and Concurrent Computer Corp., which is supplying the VOD server.
