Custom signage channel plays on Downtown East’s 12-screen network
Downtown East, a popular tourist destination in Singapore offering a myriad of entertainment choices, is using dynamic digital signage to disseminate vital information to its patrons and customers. Occupying 14.7 hectares (approximately 36.3 acres), the amenities offered by Downtown East include theme parks, resorts, restaurants, retail shops, gaming centers and children's entertainment.
Using the Scala InfoChannel suite, Downtown East developed its own customized in-house channel network called the Happenings Channel, with the initial design templates designed by Click Grafix. Visually dynamic content — event and activities information, ads, promotions and videos — is distributed to 12 plasma screens in high-traffic areas. Visitors in the lobby are fed information from two plasma screens while another screen at the help station offers vital information. A screen at the walkway provides media-rich information, as does another plasma outside the Jackpot Room. There are six plasma screens in the dining area and one more screen at the resort check-in lobby.
David Cheong, manager of infocomm development in Downtown East, operates the Happenings Channel. The channel operates from one central location and is deployed via an infrastructure consisting of LAN transmission from the network manager to three players, and through an AV splitter to the 12 screens. Because the cabling covers an extensive distance between the screens, VOPEX is used to maintain the output quality.
Happenings Channel operates 15 hours a day year round with regularly updated content.
