Discovery Purchases 54-Channel Omneon Server
Discovery Communications, parent of the Discovery Channel and many other cable TV programmers, has purchased a 54-channel Omneon Spectrum media server for the network's Latin America and Iberian operations. The new server is housed in the Discovery Television Center in Miami, and will feed 17 channels in five languages to the Carribean, Central America, South America and Iberian territories.
The new Omneon Spectrum system at the Discovery Television Center consists of 10 MediaStore arrays, with a total of 20 TB of shared storage. Each of the system's 54 ports has access to the same material, so a single copy of a program can be played at different times for different markets. The Omneon system has the flexibility to add audio management tools as they become available, which will simplify multilanguage playouts.
Some of the channels that will use the new server include Discovery Channel, Discovery Kids, Discovery Health, Discovery Travel & Adventure, People & Arts and Animal Planet.
