DISH Network has begun a 1080p HD upgrade for certain subscribers that ultimately will allow them to watch pay-TV content in HD.
The new functionality is part of DISH Network's HD expansion, which includes the rollout of TurboHD, an all-HD suite of programming packages.
A proprietary system upgrade, which started Aug. 1, for all MPEG-4 HD DVR receivers is at the center of the 1080p initiative. The upgrade activates a 1080p output feature of the set-top boxes. By early August, all DISH Network customers with MPEG-4 HD DVR receivers will be equipped to display 1080p content.
DISH Network kicked off its 1080p programming offering by offering “I Am Legend" in 1080p resolution via DISH Network's VOD service, DISH On Demand.
DISH Network also launched 17 new national HD channels last week, surpassing its goal of reaching 100 national HD channels five months ahead of schedule. DISH Network now offers up to 114 national HD channels and plans to expand that lineup to 150 channels by the end of 2008, the company said.
