Disney to Issue ‘Hannah’ in 3-D, 2-D Blu-ray Modes
In what appears to be a “first” for Blu-ray Disc packaged content, Walt Disney Studios said it plans to release its “Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour” in both 2-D and 3-D viewing modes.
The disc featuring the fictional Hannah Montana (portrayed by the real Miley Cyrus) could be a good test of the growth of Blu-ray since the demise of HD DVD because the title broke box office records for a “live concert” film in early 2008 when it played in theaters.
Disney, one of the earliest and loudest proponents of the Blu-ray format, is reportedly planning to include a 3-D “viewing mode” on the Hanna disc (as well as a 2-D version) in 1080p video. The audio tracks will be comprised of uncompressed 7.1 surround sound. Disney has set a release date of Aug. 19 for the Blu-ray version—the same day that a standard DVD also will be launched, according to published reports.
