Dolby Labs is targeting the end-to-end process of broadcast audio delivery for high-definition television (HDTV) by terrestrial broadcast, cable, and satellite networks using Dolby solutions.
Dolby’s NAB demonstration spotlighted the entire audio delivery path — from program production, through network operations, to the local affiliate for final transmission in Dolby Digital 5.1 into viewers’ homes.
The company is also offering Dolby Digital Plus, a versatile new audio codec. Based at the core on Dolby Digital, it is designed specifically to adapt to the changing demands of future audio, video delivery, and audio storage systems while simultaneously retaining backward-compatibility with the vast installed base of existing Dolby Digital 5.1-channel home theater systems.
Dolby Digital Plus has been accepted by the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) as a candidate standard. The DVD Forum has also selected Dolby Digital Plus as a mandatory audio format for HD-DVD. Most recently, the Blu-ray Disc Association approved Dolby Digital Plus as an optional audio codec for the Blu-ray Disc format.
