The European Union (EU) and the People’s Republic of China this week kicked off a series of workshops aimed at exploring potential research and technological areas in which the two governments might cooperate, including the convergence between digital broadcasting and mobile communications technologies. The initiative is part of the EU-funded MODIBEC project.
The first workshop commenced yesterday in Beijing, and will wrap up today. The next two workshops will be held on Aug. 27 and 29, in Guangzhou and Shanghai, respectively.
The workshops are meant to encourage European and local stakeholders, including experts from research institutes, authorities, industries and subject matter experts, in the fields of digital broadcasting and mobile communications technologies to meet and discuss priorities that are in line with their national policies, and to identify areas and themes suitable for international cooperation. National- and regional-level policy makers will also be in attendance.
As part of the two-year MODIBEC project, government representatives, trade bodies and members of the private sector from the EU and China will work together to promote and support research and technological development cooperation between the two countries on digital broadcasting technologies, especially in regards to the convergence of mobile communications. Among the partners involved are project coordinator ERTICO; WorldDMB, the international trade organization for DAB/DMB; Motorola; Thomson; Siemens; China Satcom, Blaupunkt; PTV; multiple Beijing- and Shanghai-based broadcasters and several Chinese manufacturing organizations.
