Euro1080 adopts aacPlus/DTS surround for MPEG-4 HD transmission
Euro1080, the pioneering HD service in Europe, will implement aacPlus/DTS multichannel audio with its switch from MPEG-2 to MPEG-4 HD transmissions.
The broadcaster, which switched to MPEG-4 transmissions across all of its channels Jan. 2, will deliver aacPlus multichannel audio over satellite to consumers' new generation of MPEG-4 set-top boxes for HDTV, where it is transcoded to DTS Digital Surround for decoding in home theater systems.
The move to the aacPlus codec opens HD viewers to reception of more HDTV programming in surround sound. The codec not only lets broadcasters deliver more programming in 5.1 channels, it also allows them to provide multiple language surround soundtracks.
