Europe: NME Arranges French Connection for HD-VMD

New Medium Enterprises, manufacturer of the HD Versatile Multilayer Disc, has given exclusive distribution rights to MCA Technology, which will oversee distribution of NME's HD VMD players and PC drives among retailers in France and a few other European markets, according to the company.

HD VMD is a proprietary HD disc format based on established red laser technology and designed to offer an alternative and cost-effective answer to the relatively more expensive products that support blue-laser formats Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD.

NME said its patented 2P process solved the restriction that has always limited discs to only two layers. Its multilayering process has a storage capacity of 20 GB (4 layers of 5 GB each). HD VMD can also handle capacities of 24, 30, 40 and 48 GB with the 2P process, the firm said, and is "a true HD 1080p format" that supports all other red laser formats.
