FAU selects Accom’s disk recorder for ultra HD camera

The Quad HD-Max camera is leveraging Accom’s WSD/HDi digital disk recorder (pictured) to record output from the camera in two simultaneous 1.5Gb/s serial streams.

Florida Atlantic University’s (FAU) Imaging Technology Space Center (ITSC) is using Accom’s WSD/HDi digital disk recorder for development and testing work on a new generation of ultra-high definition cameras.

The Quad HD-Max camera has a resolution four times that of conventional high-definition cameras, and is being jointly developed with NASA, the U.S. Navy and Panavision.

The ITSC specializes in digital imaging research and development for applications in science, manufacturing, and the motion picture and digital video industries. The camera is expected to be commercially available in 2005, and will be used for surveillance and telemedicine, including robotic procedures, inspection, education and entertainment.

The ITSC project team uses the WSD/HDi to record output from the camera in two simultaneous SMPTE 292 1.5Gb/s serial streams. The two channels convey 30p Bayer pattern video formatted so that each channel appears as 1920x1080 60i video.

The twin signals from the WSD/HDi are played back through a proprietary processor to recombine them into the full resolution at 3840x2160image.
